Hay convoy delivers vital relief to fire-affected farmers across the Alexandra district

Alexandra Events is continuing to coordinate emergency hay relief efforts following the devastating Longwood bushfires of January 2026, with a major hay convoy arriving in the district today to support fire-affected farmers and landholders.

The hay relief operation is servicing properties across Alexandra, Yarck, Molesworth, Gobur, Terip Terip and surrounding areas. Supplies being distributed include small square bales, large square bales, large round bales, lucerne, horse feed and other essential fodder.

Today’s convoy was coordinated by Jye Savage, who grew up in Alexandra, with support from colleagues Steve and Curly. Together, they organised an extraordinary 32 truckloads of hay, totalling approximately 1,000 bales, sourced from across Victoria, New South Wales and the Riverina.

Over the past week, around 700 bales of hay have already been distributed to farmers and landowners impacted by the fires, with today’s delivery significantly boosting local supply.

Andrew Embling, Hay Distribution Coordinator with Alexandra Events, said the focus remains on getting immediate support to those who need it most.

“Our priority right now is making sure an initial round of hay reaches people on an as-needs basis,” Mr Embling said. “Once that first round is complete, we will move to subsequent allocations so that all impacted farmers receive support.”

With pastures unlikely to recover until after autumn rains, and many properties requiring paddocks to be re-sown, ongoing fodder support will remain critical in the months ahead.

“For many farmers, this is a long road,” Mr Embling said. “Feed requirements won’t disappear overnight, and this support is about helping people stabilise through a very difficult period.”

Alexandra Events Chair Caolan O’Connor said today’s convoy was a powerful show of regional solidarity.

“Seeing 32 trucks roll into Murrindindi today was incredibly moving,” Mr O’Connor said. “This effort reflects the generosity of farming communities across multiple states, and the commitment of people who understand what it means to stand by each other in tough times.”

Local residents gathered along the route through Seymour and Yea to watch the convoy pass, with Victoria Police, Limestone CFA and other agencies coordinating traffic and safety arrangements.

“We’re very grateful to VicPol, Limestone CFA and everyone involved in ensuring the convoy moved safely through the region,” Mr O’Connor said. “It was a moment that lifted spirits across the community.”

Farmers and landholders impacted by the fires who require hay assistance are encouraged to make contact.
